Even though engineers have tried to make the environment on board the ISS as close to Earthlike as possible, the crew has major adjustments to make. The ISS has personal-hygiene stations where the crew can wash and use the toilet. The toilets are similar to those in an airliner, except they have foot restraints and seat belts. Instead of the bio-wastes being flushed away with water, they are swept away with a suction system. These wastes are not dumped overboard. They are dried, stored, and taken back to Earth on the shuttle.

The early Mercury and Gemini astronauts had to eat bite-sized food-cubes covered with gelatin, to prevent crumbs. In microgravity, crumbs are dangerous because they float and can get into the equipment. The food is much better now. Along with a refrigerator, the crew has a microwave oven, and they eat shrimp cocktail, steak, and chicken salsa.14

The ISS gets all its food from the space shuttle or Russia’s Progress cargo spacecraft. Some of the food is dried, and then water is added to it at mealtime. Most of the food is packed in pouches and ready to eat, either cold or heated. Fresh fruit, veggies, milk, and ice cream are shipped up to the ISS on the space shuttles and Progress cargo spacecraft.
